Where is the "AMD Radeon RX 490"? After almost half year of
speculations, insinuations, rumors and exclusive leaks, AMD has yet to release,
or even introduce what has caught the eye of many tech analysts,
hobbyists, and hardcore gamers, is AMD's rumored last graphics card for
2016 "Radeon RX 490", true, or plain rumors?
"AMD Radeon RX 490" Surfaced
Back in July, information about "AMD Radeon RX 490" surfaced on the SAPPHIRE website, a retailer partner of AMD as reported by TweakTown.com.
It could have been just an ordinary release of another graphics card
from AMD. The only thing is, "Radeon RX 490" is not included on the
current list of graphics cards from the Polaris 10 architecture.
"AMD has confirmed to us that the RX 480 is based on the most powerful configuration of the Polaris 10 GPU," WCCFTech.com reported,
then adding that, "This makes the RX 490 quite the mystery card,
because the most powerful configuration of Polaris 10 is already
in-use." So if Polaris 10 is maxed out with the release of "Radeon RX
480", what's the configuration of "Radeon RX 490"?
And this has been the hottest topic since then. Especially
since the release date is intended before the year ends, meaning AMD
would still try to beat NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 this year.
"AMD Radeon RX 490" Specifications - Dual-Polaris or Vega Architecture
Then, details of "AMD Radeon RX 490" specifications were revealed as posted by VideoCardz.com. And the single, major revelation about the purported upcoming
video card is that it will be the first graphics card of Vega
architecture, with 8192MB RAM HBM2, 4096-bit bus width and 512GB/s
bandwidth.
But questions rose anew following the recent benchmark of an
AMD graphics card, which many believe is "Radeon RX 490". Based on the
information released by Ashes of the Singularity,
the graphics card was known only as Device ID 687F:C1. Two contrasting
things arose during the benchmark. First, the benchmark was unable to
categorize the GPU architecture which would mean it's new, leaning
towards Vega.
Second, the performance was measly comparable to that of
GeForce GTX 1080, which is powered by GDDR5X. If early rumors are true,
then "AMD Radeon RX 490" powered by HBM2, is supposed to be four times
greater than GDDR5X. Thus, the result leans towards Polaris 10.
But whether "AMD Radeon RX 490" is Vega 10 or Dual-Polaris
10, it's no longer out of the question. The only question now is, will
it be released? And if yes, when?
